MOTHERS'S RETURNING TO THE WORKPLACE AFTER MATERNITY LEAVE
Returning to work from maternity leave can be a particularly stressful time for new mothers and it is essential that employers are equipped to safeguard their employee’s mental and physical health.
A smooth transition back to work can be the difference between retaining a motivated employee or losing her because the demands of her previous role and family life are irreconcilable.
The transition process should be well-planned and agreed by both the employer and new mother.
I returned to work when my second son was 6 months old, unfortunately 4 years ago we were not talking about mental health in the way we are today and I felt my return lacked open communication around not just my mental health but also my physical health, this led me to launch Movement for Mums.
Communication is key to the successful return of mothers to work and employers should be able to offer support that helps mothers balance the demands of a new family member and returning to work.
The Movement for Mum method was launched to help support mothers in the workplace. I believe that mental health and physical health go hand in hand. My method is designed for the individuality of each of your mothers returning to work.
A “one size fits all” approach will never be appropriate when supporting returning mothers, as the transition will differ from individual to individual. While it might be a source of trepidation for some, for others it may be seamless.
